The Mafia in a Sicilian Village

By Anton Blok
English

Fieldwork focussed on the context in which the Mafia developed?: the immediate local setting of large estates and the wider networks of kinship, friendship, and patron-client relationships that tied local people to the outside world. This oblique approach favoured observation and collecting stories over asking straightforward questions. Open-ended and contingent, fieldwork avoided running into minefields or deliberately creating them.
