Abstract

This article is based on a recent ethnographic survey conducted in central Russia. It analyses the close and complex links that connect territories and memories in the post-Soviet space. It focuses on three factors: a place (the town of Mologa and its surroundings), an event (its submersion and disappearance), and a social object (the group of people originating from this town and their descendants). It places special emphasis on the way these factors are integrated into Russian families’ memories and manipulated. By examining the specific role played by the memory of a place, it is possible to explore how a collective memory is being built in Russia.
