In European rural societies, poisonous plants are used as reference points for plant classification and the suspicion they arouse can spread to other harmless plants of similar appearance. The line between the edible and the poisonous are explored here together with their geographic and cultural variations. Have these lines disappeared in our modern societies which seem to confuse the two notions?
