Our Own Albanians: Migrant Labor in an Arvanitic Community in the Peloponnese

Greece became the privileged destination of a great number of Albanian migrants in the nineties. In the agricultural commune of Guerbessi, the Arvanites (Greeks of ancient Albanese origin) recognize these immigrants as culturally related to them through a common idiom – the Arvanite language – and their left ideology. This recognition enables them to control and manage this immigration and their work relationships with Albanians. In this context, the local community redefinies its relationships with the Greek State and reconstructs its identity.
