How Can One Be a Pomak in Contemporary Greece?

Reflexivity

In a time in which identities are proliferating and spectacle is everywhere, the redefinition of identities in regions marked with a strong cultural alterity is subjected to hegemonic policies. These local policies that handle changing environments par excellence (Thrace, for instance) apply more especially to minorities such as the Pomaks (Slavic-speaking Muslims). “Social subjects” (individuals, hierarchically situated groups) of various condition are marginalized with regards to their rights and way of life. The author examines the impact of these policies and the way the ethnographic analysis combined with a cinematographic approach points out and even provokes social discriminations, inequalities, and mediations.
