The article presents from the perspective of agrarian ethnography the processes used by Hungarian populations since their settlement in the Carpathian basin around 896 to adapt themselves to the local ecological, historical and economic conditions. On the basis of a historico-geographical analysis the author shows the changes that occured in the modes of agrarian production.
