Intra-Professional Conflicts and the Struggle for Visibility in French Television

Territories in Question: Routes in Territories
By Dominique Pasquier
English

On the basis of a series of ethnographical observations, the present article addresses the practices of those who are working in French television. It examines the organisation of power in a situation of interdependence. The analysis thus focuses on the conflicts between the “visible” professions (actors, presenters) and the “invisible” professions (producers, technicians, directors). It points out the strategies adopted by the “invisible” professions in order to minimise the importance of the “visible” professions, with a view to the reestablishment of the hierarchical or cooperational principles frequently neutralised as a result of the popularity criteria specific to television.
