Drawing on various several works dealing with the “writings of the ego”, the present article considers some examples of graffiti recorded in prison cells as the expression of the prisoners’ autobiographical enterprise. The attraction shown for certain events in their lives could be explained in relation to their conditions of segregation and the denial of their own identity suffered by the prisoners. By analyzing the drawings made by a deaf and dumb prisoner in the Brignoles prison, we try to understand the complexity of the feelings which could lead a prisoner to reveal his life and, in doing so, to place himself above his peers.
