“Citizenship of swimming”, the name of the 200 meter badge, illustrates the ideology that all Swedes should be able to swim. Today 95 % of eleven-year-olds can swim. There remains however a constant debate and concern over an alleged decrease in swimming abilities and deterioration in the codes of behaviour and hygienic standards in public baths. This field study of a bath in a suburb of Stockholm explores the visual and material culture of locker rooms and pool. It also examines how visitors of various origin and age use the bath. On the whole, “Citizenship of swimming” seems to represent a tradition attracting the participation and support of a wide range of groups.
