Against Aestheticism in Museums of Anthropology

Territories in Question: Routes in Territories
By Bernard Formoso
English

In this short critical note, the author reviews the shortcomings of the dominant procedures used by the museums of anthropology to exhibit their non-Western artefacts. Against the aestheticism, exemplified by the Musée du Quai Branly (Paris), which often determines the choices of the items to be displayed, he advocates a didactic approach shifting the focus from the artefacts’ form to their function and meaning. The purpose of this redirecting is to revive the first and main mission of the museums of anthropology, consisting to introduce the public to non-Western forms of rationality by the means of their crafts.
