Educating the Nation

Religion in Norwegian Politics

The main concern in this article is to provide a local example for the further discussion of the emergent trend of religious nationalism. Empirically the discussion focuses on the effort at integration into the majority norms and values through religious education in the public school system. One suggestion is that in Norway the believers’ trust in God and politicians’ fear of the believers are fused into a configuration which represents an ethnographic oddity in contemporary Europe. However, viewing this process in the light of the present state of the debate on secularism, the case may also suggest a configuration at the cutting edge of this new international trend of establishing religion as the essence of the nation.
