At the Gynecologist

Learning Feminine Bodily and Sexual Norms
By Laurence Guyard
English

Taking stock of research devoted to the medicalization of women’s bodies at the gynecologist’s, the author shows that adolescence is a time to learn feminine bodily and sexual norms. Be it moderation, self-control, normalization of the reproductive body, or sentimental sexuality, these norms tend to perpetuate negative representations of the female body and to reinforce inequalities between men and women.
