Abstract

This paper examines the matter of disgust workers may experience when they come in contact with human excrement and/or corpses in the course of their job. How do these workers cope with disgust, both the disgust they experience as well as the disgust society expresses with regard to their activities? How do the different forms of disgust come into play at the technical, gestural, and representational levels that support and organize their work? Associated with physiological, psychological, and sociological dimensions, this affect raises complex questions for these workers regarding the acceptance of their work and the flexibility they may have vis-à-vis social norms.
