Romanticism brought ugliness onto the battlefield of aesthetics and twentieth century art transformed the banal. But what is it that inspires in us either disgusts or awe ? Just how powerful is art ? To provide an answer to this question, we compare La Raie by Chardin with The Self Portrait by David Nebreda, and we analyse the arguments in favour of the theory of aesthetic unlimited aesthetisation.
