The idealized image of the « young ballet dancer » or « ballet student » is widely mentioned in researches about dancers. Yet, few have specifically addressed the first years of dance training. Based on a long lasting field study of two groups of girl beginners, between 4 and 11 years old, at the junction of sociology of socialization, sociology of childhood and sociology of interactions, this article deals with the physical socialization of these young girls, focusing on actions, constraints of the body, whether working or during relaxation.
