Slovenes in Argentina: The Concept of Homeland in the Construction of a Diasporic Community

Slovenia was a country of strong emigration flows in the twentieth century. Due to poverty and political repression, people fled to other European countries and to the “New World,” especially to the USA, Canada, Australia, and Argentina. This paper addresses the Slovene diasporic community in Argentina and explores social memories of exile after the Second World War, as well as the role of the place of origin, home, and homeland as spatio-cultural concepts in the construction of the community, contemporary “return” migration, and related identity processes.
