The Concept of “Return” in French Novels about the Retirada

By Sylvie Sagnes
English

For about ten years, recollection novels have taken part in the memory bustle of which the Retirada is the subject in France. Far from acting just as witnesses or historians, the authors of these novels strive to propose a model of “good” memory. Considering the toxicity they ascribe to the memory of the Spanish exile, their intention is a seemingly challenging task. Nevertheless, they succeed by establishing the possibility of a norm based upon various types of return. In each scenario, they lead the way to nostalgia.
