Past Space: Memorial Evocations and Heterotopia in Viévola (Tende)

By Cyril Isnart
English

Drawn from the ethnography of a hamlet of Piedmontese migrants, this text describes how the memory of migration and the negotiation of the place of migrants’ descendants take place during the hamlet's annual festival, which is designed as a nostalgic device. Using and discussing notions such as structural nostalgia, heterotopia, and space, it depicts the conditions of creativity, transmission, and efficacy of the nostalgia, through the construction of a past space.
