Politically Important Places: Tito’s Village of Origin in the Post Socialist Period

This paper analyzes ways in which the inhabitants of Kumrovec, - the birth place of Josip Broz Tito - influence, negotiate or even subvert the dominant narrative in their community. In public discourse, Kumrovec is still depicted as the symbolic 'cradle' of the former socialist ideology. The author examines different perspectives on the development of this ‘place of political importance and the role of local people in defining their own distinctive identity.
