The Law of the Supermarket? Online Dating and Representations of Love

Online dating sites are described—by users and commentators alike—by means of the “supermarket” metaphor. The term is invoked as a dismissal of an online space considered antithetical to love and the formation of stable relationships. Through the analysis of user narratives, we aim at understanding what are the issues at stake that lead people to associate online dating sites not only with the marketplace but also the sexual sphere.
