We will never speak of it again. . .” Analyzing the memory of abortion in Communist Romania

The banning of abortion (1966‑1989) in Ceauşescu’s Romania is considered one of the most repressive demographic policies of the twentieth century. How can we analyze the memory of this traumatic past, which is still a taboo in post-Communist Romania? Starting from different methodological dilemmas experienced during fieldwork, the ethnologist reflects on the possible restitution of this memory, as well as on the limits of a piece of research carried out between a shared present and an unlived past.
