This article explores the experiences of aging of elderly people who have been deaf since birth or early childhood and who live in a specialized institutional setting for elderly deaf people. This institution, De Gelderhorst, offers them housing and care, while at the same time celebrating deaf culture. Conditions for sustainability are created by balancing medical and cultural labels of deafness. Through a politics of belonging, new meanings of deafness and autonomy are enabled, with the concept of good care possibly also being redefined.
