In this article, the authors analyze the social reorganization to which the French countryside is being exposed by studying the cohabitation practices in Puisaye-Forterre. To build a framework of analysis, they reviewed the literature dedicated to the “specificity” of the countryside, while also using other approaches, as the French countryside is being deeply transformed by mobility and capitalism. This framework was put to the test by conducting fieldwork at the village level, trying to grasp both the elements involved in terms of the closeness and singularity of local places and the factors that play a role where distant and global processes are concerned.
