This article analyzes three temporary exhibitions organized in collaboration with Oceanian source communities: Te Maori (1984–1988), De jade et de nacre (1990), and Vanuatu Océanie. Îles de cendre et de corail/Spirit blong ol Bubu i kam bak (1996–1998). All three constituted experiments in “de-heritagization,” re-establishing genealogical and ancestral ties to museum collections. This article seeks to examine the collaborations initiated and the ceremonies organized. These experiments in “de-heritagization” are placed in a historical context to understand the decolonization of museum collections.
