Loneliness and violence: A study of the agricultural world
By Romain Daviere
English
This article examines the lived experiences of loneliness among farmers. Based on ethnographic research conducted in the Côtes-d’Armor region of France and interviews with farmers affected and those around them, we show how the nature of loneliness transforms over the course of farming trajectories. While loneliness can be experienced as positive and integrating, this article highlights the existence of another kind of solitude—one that is endured rather than chosen—becoming a source of violence directed both toward others and oneself.
