This article describes driving as an activity compatible with a pursuit of “complete” solitude. First, it shows how routine commutes can be transformed into moments for oneself—enabling individuals to distance themselves from daily pressures and to regain control of their lives. Second, it looks at solitude behind the wheel as an opportunity to cultivate openness: to oneself, to others, and to the world. Finally, it acknowledges that these moments can be disrupted by inner thoughts as well as by external disturbances, thwarting drivers’ attempts to reflect on and organized their lives.
